World’s first successful rhino birth after an artificial insemination
Lulu, a 27-year-old southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum), gave birth to rhinoceros calf at the Budapest Zoo January 23, 2007. The female rhino calf, which was born on Tuesday, is the first ever to be conceived through artificial insemination. Due to the "friendship-like" relationship of the zoo's adult rhinos, there was no chance for natural breeding. Veterinarians of the Budapest Zoo in co-operation with their colleagues from Germany and Austria used an artificial insemination.

Rebirth of the Great Rock
Works begin
Restoration works on the zoo's Great Rock began in the past days. The reconstruction of the almost 100 years old cement concrete artificial rock is expected to be completed by September 2007. The animals in the enclosures near the rock had to be moved because of the works. A few animals were put up in temporary facilities within the zoo, while others were temporarily moved to other institutions.
