Butterfly Garden opened again

Good weather made it possible for zoo keepers to open the butterfly exhibit earlier than usual. This summer-exhibit has the area of 260 m2, with 1200 m3 of airspace to provide plenty of room for the 600 brightly colored butterflies of 45 tropical species to “fly around”.
Most of the species come from butterfly farms located in Costa Rica and Malaysia. The butterflies are transferred to Budapest in the form of cocoons. After this inactive pupal stage they go through a spectacular metamorphosis and turn into a familiar and colorful winged adult form. Since our keepers have great success with breeding this insect, usually only one transfer is enough to start up with the first “family” at Budapest Zoo.
