Reconstruction of the Bears’ “apartments” has come to an end
After a two-years-long cut, Budapest Zoo proudly presents its three Brown Bears (two Syrian Brown Bears and one Eurasian Brown Bear) and their newly renovated, exciting cave-like enclosures surrounding the Great Rock area.
Szíriai medveSuch species were last introduced to zoo visitors in the 19th century. The zoo at the same time recalls an old tradition according to which the first brown bear ever shown in the zoo was a famous Syrian Brown Bear called Kristóf. In the wild the Syrian Brown Bear can be found in western Asia. A special characteristic of this subspecies is its lighter, coffee-like brown color. Renovation of the bears’ enclosures was also part of the Great Rock reconstruction works, as well as the previously opened Savanna Exhibit and the Gorilla & Orangutan Park. Alongside the heritage listed Great Rock the bears’ new home has an area of 420 m2 and swimming pool with a capacity of 30.000 liters. Through the large windows visitors can now get a closer look of the animals’ everyday life.
