The Dragon has arrived
Hungary’s first Komodo dragon has arrived from Chester Zoo on Saint George’s Day. Such a species has never been shown to the public before. Because of this, Budapest Zoo visitors have awaited the dragon with lots of curiosity.
The “little lizard” hatched 15-01-2007 and has the name Irwin, after Steve Irwin (1962-2006) the world-famous Australian television personality, wildlife expert and zoo director. Irwin is one meter long, but may grow up to the size of three meters. In the wild the Komodo dragon can be found on the islands of Indonesia, like Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang, Gili Dasami, or Flores. As usual by endangered species, Irwin was transferred to Budapest Zoo being part of the EAZA conservation breeding program (EEP).
