Welcome
Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We have the great pleasure of inviting you to the 6th scientific meeting of the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary in 2006. Hungary has already hosted such international symposia organised by the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Berlin (IZW) on two occasions, in Budapest in 1970 and in Veszprém in 1982. Now it is Budapest’s turn again. Spanning both sides of the Danube, the capital offers a glimpse of the diversity of Hungary from the pleasant green of the hills of Buda to the wide flat plain of Pest.
The main topics of the conference are dermatology, ophthalmology and imaging techniques, which are all challenging subjects for zoo and wildlife veterinary. Skin problem diagnosis are rarely straightforward, and treatment usually requires special attention, due to the fact that daily local drug administrations are not an option for many species.
Ophthalmology is always an interesting topic, especially as regards surgical methods which have improved significantly in recent years. Imaging techniques are fascinating devices that will surely be increasingly used in our field. In our opinion, in the not too distant future we will more and more frequently collaborate with specialists such as CT and MRI professionals using these devices, and leading us to proper diagnosis.
Workshops will take place on Wednesday (24 May, 2006) and the actual meeting will start with a Welcome Party on Wednesday evening at 19.00 in the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture (near Heroes’ Square). This will be a unique introduction of the Hungarian capital. The meeting will close on Saturday, 27 May at 19.00 with a Farewell Party at the garden of the famous Gundel Restaurant, adjacent to the zoo. On Sunday we visit the Hortobágy National Park, which is not only a World Heritage site, but the home of Przewalski horses and abundant birdlife. All registered participants and accompanying persons are invited to the Welcome Party. Thus, all of the optional programmes are to be signed on the registration form.
We are sure that the exciting scientific programme together with the traditional warm Hungarian hospitality will make this EAZWV Annual Meeting an unforgettable experience for all participants.
We look forward to welcoming you in Budapest in May 2006
